Marie obtained her PhD in Zoology from the University of Vienna in collaboration with the University of Hawaii, where she studied the evolution and development of the cephalopod arm crown. From there she was recruited to the Italian Institute of Technology in Genova, Italy to examine the development and regeneration of the octopus muscular arm. Her new found interest in regenerative biology eventually drew her back to the US, where she studied tendon regeneration in zebrafish at the Mass General Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. Marie joined the BMC series as a Locum Associate Editor of BMC Ophthalmology, BMC Gastroenterology and BMC Zoology in 2022. She is based in the London office.

Haik Endowed Chair, Department of Ophthalmology, Hamilton Eye Institute and is Professor of Ophthalmology in the College of Medicine at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) in Memphis TN. Dr. Asbell has received numerous awards, including the Phillips Thygeson Lecturer honor from the University of California-San Francisco, the Meibom-Moore Lecturer of Honor award (Dusseldorf), and the Secretariat Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and has been named Fellow of ARVO. Her research areas of interest include cornea, anterior segment surgery, ocular biomarkers, refractive surgery and antibiotic resistance in eye infections. She has published over 200 peer reviewed articles and is a regular member of NEI review panels. Dr. Asbell has been the Principal Investigator for over 100 clinical trials, including HEDS study on treating ocular herpes simplex disease, PERK study that set the standard for evaluations of refractive surgery procedures, and DREAM on the use of Omega 3 for dry eye disease.

Dr. Park is a board certified ophthalmologist by Korean Ophthalmology Society. He is the Chairman of Department of Ophthalmology, Dongguk University Hospital, South Korea. He graduated Seoul National University, College of Medicine and completed PhD at Samsung Medical Center, Sungkyunkwan University, Seoul. He investigated adenovirus mediated intraocular gene delivery during his post-doc period at Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins University, US. His area of expertise is cataract surgery, corneal surgery and refractive surgery. His clinical research interest includes optimizing refractive outcome after multifocal intraocular lens, corneal crosslinking, novel pterygium surgery, and acanthamoeba keratitis. His basic research focus includes ocular drug delivery system, ophthalmic use of nanoparticles, nitric oxide application for ocular surface diseases, and bioengineering of corneal endothelial cells.

Andrzej Grzybowski, M.D., Ph.D., MBA, is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Chair of Department of Ophthalmology, University of Warmia and Mazury, Olsztyn, Poland; Head of Institute for Research in Ophthalmology, Foundation for Ophthalmology Development, Poznan, Poland. He is active in international scientific societies including Euretina (Co-opted Board member 2016-2018), Retina Society, AAO, EVER, ESCRS, and ISRS, ISBCS, International Council of Ophthalmology, and Cogan Society. He became lifelong member (chair LIV) of the European Academy of Ophthalmology and is a member of Ophthalmic Education Consortium (OEC) advisory committee of Ophthalmology Foundation. He has been active contributor to major ophthalmic conferences worldwide, including AAO, APAO, WCO, CCOS, Euretina, ESCRS, EVER, ISOPT, etc. As the only Polish ophthalmologist he was included in TOP 2% ranking of world-best scientists prepared by Stanford University for 2019 and 2020. Expertscape worldwide ranking: No 1 in cataract field and No 1 in cataract extraction field. In 2021, he received ISRS (International Society for Refractive Surgery) Founders’ Award, and published a book Artificial Intelligence in Ophthalmology (Springer). Dr Javier Zarranz-Ventura, Hospital ClÃnic Barcelona, Spain
Dr. Javier Zarranz-Ventura obtained his medical degree at Universidad de Navarra, specialist training in ophthalmology at ClÃnica Universidad de Navarra, and a PhD in medicine at Universidad de Navarra, awarded cum laude with European mention. He underwent a fellowship in medical retina and uveitis at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London and two fellowships in vitreoretinal surgery in Gloucestershire and Bristol (2011-2014).
He has been working as a vitreoretinal surgeon at the Institut ClÃnic d'Oftalmologia (ICOF), Hospital ClÃnic de Barcelona, and Hospital Universitari Sagrat Cor in Barcelona since May 2014. His main clinical and research interests are age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic eye disease, and vitreoretinal surgery, as well as retinal imaging techniques, particularly OCT and OCT-A, and Artificial Intelligence. He is member of numerous scientific societies such as EURETINA, BEAVRS, ARVO and the Spanish Society of Retina and Vitreous (SERV).
Dr. Zarranz-Ventura has authored >250 scientific communications, >75 scientific papers, >35 book chapters, and 3 books, and has given >160 invited lectures. He has a H-index of 20, an i10-index of 37, and has >1600 citations.
Dr Eleni Papageorgiou, University Hospital of Larissa, Greece
Dr Papageorgiou is a consultant ophthalmic surgeon, specialized in pediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and neuroophthalmology at the University Hospital of Larissa Greece. She graduated from the Medical School of the Aristoteles University Thessaloniki Greece, and subsequently completed a PhD in Neuroscience-Neuroophthalmology at the University of Tuebingen, Germany, funded by a Marie-Curie EU-Programme. Dr Papageorgiou has completed her specialist training in Ophthalmology at the Centre for Ophthalmology, University of Tuebingen, and then completed a fellowship in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus at the University of Leicester, UK. Her practice focuses on the management of primary, secondary and tertiary care of patients with strabismus and ocular motor disorders, as well as general paediatric ophthalmology. She is active in resident training and is also involved in student education. Her research focuses on amblyopia management, pediatric ocular imaging, driving with visual field deficits and ocular manifestations of neurological disease. In 2014 she became an Associate Editor, and in 2020 a Senior Editorial Board Member for BMC Ophthalmology.
Dr Luca Rossetti, Clinica Oculistica, Università di Milano, Italy
Professor Luca Rossetti completed his fellowship at the Clinical Epidemiology Laboratory of the Mario Negri Institute in Milan and at the Clinical Trial Unit of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Maryland, Baltimore. He is currently the Director of the Eye Clinic at the University of Milan, San Paolo Hospital, and is a Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Milan. His main research interest is on clinical research in glaucoma. He has been responsible for the Glaucoma Unit at the San Paolo Hospital since 2000 and has been involved in over 40 clinical trials, mainly in the field of glaucoma. He is a member of the European Vision Institute and has authored over 150 articles in peer reviewed journals, mainly on the topic of glaucoma. He has been on the board of BMC Ophthalmology since 2012.

Michele Figus, M.D., Ph.D, works as Associate Professor of Ophthalmology and Chairman of the Residency Training Program since 2018 at the University of Pisa, Italy. He is currently Head of Ophthalmology at Azienda Ospedaliero Universitaria Pisana, in Pisa. Fellow of the European Board of Ophthalmology he has been elected as National Expert in Diagnosis for the Italian Ophthalmology Society for ten years and Board member in the Health Art Academy in Italy and in ophthalmic societies. He leaded as Principal Investigator many clinical trials and published more than 140 papers in JCR Impact Factor indexed Journals. His main research project is glaucoma, focused on glaucoma surgery.
