Percentage of ganglion cells stained with RAGE among diabetic and and non-diabetic rats. In the middle part of the retina, ganglion cells were counted in histological H&E-stained sections from four animals of each group of diabetic rats and controls. Twenty sections were analyzed in each animal and 10 standard fields (250 μm horizontally) were microscopically examined in each section. Ganglion cells stained with RAGE were then counted, and the percentage of retinal ganglion cells (y-axis) that each sample included was determined. There was a statistically significantly higher rate of ganglion cells stained with RAGE in diabetic rats fed on a HFD compared to diabetic animals fed on a normal diet as well as control rats.
