Changes in mean best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA; measured in terms of ETDRS letters to allow for statistical analysis) after macular hole (MH) surgery using the internal limiting membrane (ILM) insertion technique with nerve growth factor (NGF) injection (solid circles) or ILM insertion alone (solid squares). BCVA significantly improved at 3rd and 6th months after surgery in the NGF group, and in the insertion group after 6 months (P = 0.0081, 0.0276, and 0.0255, respectively, compared to baseline). However, the NGF group exhibited better recovery than the insertion group at 3rd month after surgery (P = 0.0301). The error bars are SEMs. aP < 0.05
