Experimental cornea 1 month after the procedure. Adhesive contacts between epithelial cells are represented by normal desmosomes typical for corneal epithelial layer (big arrowheads). Hemidesmosomes (small arrrows) between basal epithelial cells and basement membrane are distributed extremely irregularly (compare zones I and II). The foamy layer (between big arrows) is significantly thicker in comparison to 1-week post-op specimens. Numerous activated fibroblasts (AF) are observed within this layer. Electron microphotograph.
