Quantitative assessment of hard exudate (HE) area using ImageJ software. Color fundus photograph a was split into three color channels and the total area covered by HEs was extracted from the green channel image using an automatic threshold function b which was converted into an automatic measurement c after manually eliminating areas that did not represent hard exudates (e.g., optic disc)
