Optical appearance of untreated (non-cross-linked) rabbit scleral patches after 0, 8 and 20 h MMP1-degradation (after 24 h barely visible). No remarkable decrease of scleral patch diameter could be observed. The tissue became transparent and the surface became rough. Small tissue/protein clots are dissociated from the patch and finally, a translucent tissue network remained in the incubation solution at 24 h. Scale bar: 2 mm
